The book is a very unique one. It begins with an introductory comic created by Ian Williams and I, using scripts and avatars created by our co-authors on the Manifesto: Michael Green, Kimberly Meyers, Scott Smith and Susan Squier.
This intro is followed by text essays by each of the authors about their area of work in Graphic Medicine. Each chapter starts with the authors’ comics “origin story” and describe how they’ve come to integrate comics into their scholarship.
The book is also an anthology of great works of Graphic Medicine, as each chapter is followed by an example carefully chosen by that chapter’s author.
The book’s conclusion features testimonial avatars by almost thirty members of the interdisciplinary graphic medicine community commenting on the impact graphic medicine has on their work.

“Something remarkable and game changing is being sparked by the alliance between comics and medicine. It’s becoming clear that these graphic narratives can deepen understanding, not only of facts but of feelings, between patients, families, and professionals. A spoonful of comics really does help the medicine go down.”
