Here’s the particularly labor-intensive Cartoon of the Week for next week, artfully displayed, in process and traveling through California. The inking is done, only colorizing and posting remain. Kind of a Comic Nurse behind-the-scenes. That’s my portable supply box on the ledge behind the boards. I upgraded from the Hello Kitty pencil box about a year ago. I think it was a good decision.

Jean Sagert (and Whitey, who I think working “for the railroad” before he retired) did live in a upper floor of a two-flat. It was a nice building fairly close to Marquette Park. It had a really nice “sun porch” behind the kitchen.

Overall the apartment was a lot like Grandma’s bungalow, just smaller.

Remember the stuffed toy kitten? It had a gingham (or maybe houndstooth) fabric and was scented with cinnamon. I don’t think it was intended for kids — maybe a giant satchet/potpourri, but I really enjoy remembering it.

Jean also had a great rocking chair. I remember we’d sit in it and she’d either read to us or have us read to her. The all-time favorite book was a Richard Scarry one, with Lowly WOrm & Huckle Cat and schoolbus — I can’t find it on Alibris — hope it is still at mom’s house…
