Drawing Medicine: Week One

DRAWING MEDICINE:

WEEK ONE

Wednesday,  January 14, 3-5pm

Lurie Building, 1st floor, Gray Conference Room

(303 East Superior Street)

In this seminar we will read, discuss, and create informal drawings and graphic narratives (comics) on the themes of illness, medicine, caregiving, and health care. We will use drawing as a way to think about the medical encounter from various perspectives. You will be expected to complete brief reading/listening/drawing assignments, participate in drawing exercises, and present a graphic novel (will be provided) to the class.

PREPARATION FOR FIRST CLASS:

1. Watch this brief video:

STORIES ARE GOOD MEDICINE

(if the link above won’t work, try this one.)

2. and this entertaining video:

WHAT IS AN IMAGE?

3. Read this short piece, “The Computer Will See You Now” by Anne Armstrong Coben

——————-

BONUS: If you’re curious: who is Lynda Barry? What its the biological function of the arts?

 Listen to this story.
