I did this sort-of cartoon a few years ago, when thinking about Louis Sullivan. The text of the cartoon (minus my commentary) appears on the back side of his gravestone in Graceland Cemetery. Sullivan’s story has always been fascinating to me. He was a guy who was clearly brilliant and talented, but also troubled, angry, bitter. He died alone and penniless despite all of his fame and accomplishments. Astonishing tombs he designed enshrine his clients in Graceland, yet his own grave there had no marker until years after his death. Despite the gorgeous detail and delicacy of his work, must have been a real pain in the ass.
