Still a VERY slow photos week. Working on final papers of the summer quarter. That also includes a cartoon. I’ve been following Alison Bechdel’s blog, and she discusses drawing her cartoons from photos. (Marissa Marchetto also talks about this in her graphic novel Cancer Vixen.) I’ve used this technique in other work, like my architectural caricatures, commissions, and in cartoons when I draw something very specific, like a kind of bug. I don’t usually do this for my regular cartoons. Bechdel stages her photos very close to how she plans to draw the cartoon, even to the extent of having friends pose for shots in certain positions, like holding hands, sitting, hugging, etc. For my current piece I needed to draw myself at my computer. I wasn’t happy with how it was turning out, so I decided to try the photo technique. And, who knew? (Only every other real artist, duh.) It really makes a difference! Next post will be the cartoon image that resulted from this photo.
Hey, how cool is that “Listen Now”? You are always ahead of the curve, MK!
