The new imprint Graphic Mundi will be releasing an updated reprinting of Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 in November. In preparation for that release, I’m going to do a few posts revisiting the process of making the book, share some previously unreleased materials, and perhaps even making some new work to accompany the release.
The first thing I want to share is some audio. Studs Terkel, a big influence on my interview technique, often spoke of the vox humana, and the importance of its value.
So in an effort to preserve the vox humana of the Unit 371 oral history project that informs Taking Turns, I share the audio/video below. I have played some of this audio during classroom visits and public appearances, but never posted it here.
