Today we went out to Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois. Dr. Farnsworth was a nephrologist who commissioned Mies to build her a weekend retreat. This glass and steel project inspired Phillip Johnson to undertake his glass house in New Caanan, CT. There is evidence that the relationship between Dr. Farnsworth and Mies became more than close as the project advanced. It was finished in 1951 but so were they. Litigation ensued. They are both buried, you guessed it, in Graceland Cemetery. I know where he is – I’m off to find her. Stay tuned. More photos on my photostream.
