This week was the greatly anticipated Tool Workshop Day. The goal of the class was for the students to go from station to station, trying out the tools of the cartoonist’s trade and get a feel for the media to help them decide which to choose for their final project.
There were eight stations:
- pencils, rulers, and erasers (kinda boring)
- inking with tech pens
- inking with nibs and india ink (aka the torture table)
- inking with brush and india ink/ink wash
- watercolors
- markers
- colored pencils and oil pastels
- Lynda Barry tribute “Draw Your Demons” Japanese ink station (a crowd favorite)
Whilst working we needed music, of course. We listened mostly to a drawing mix on Soundcloud. For future workshop session listening pleasure, every student is submitting one song for a custom class mix.
We decided to put all the work on the floor to dry in the center of the room. I’d spent many hours trying to figure out how to coordinate all these materials and stations in an organized way, and I’m pleased to say that I think workshop day was a big success, thanks to my awesome students.
