I’m very, very pleased to say that this evening I will start teaching my first full undergraduate course, “Writing and Drawing the Graphic Memoir” at Columbia College in Chicago, where I am now part-time faculty in the new Creative Writing department, nonfiction division.
Many hours have gone into creating the syllabus and teaching plan. Inspired, as always, by Lynda Barry, I thought I’d share some of the course as we go.
Our textbooks will include:
We will also cover the work of Alison Bechdel, but in excerpted form. In fact, the work of many other creators will be included in the course, I just limited the number of books my students will need to actually purchase to the ones I want to be sure they own, and keep on their bookshelves to consult in the future. What else they choose to buy will be up to them.
One of the many handouts my students will get today I just turned into a comic this AM. Through it, both in form and content, I hope to convey the values of the course.
