This week in class we’ll be discussing David Small’s graphic memoir, Stitches.
We’ll discuss Small’s rationale for creating Stitches, the approach he took to doing so, and his advice to others who seek to create graphic memoir.
We’ll do an exercise I’ve discussed here before, in this context to explore silent storytelling from Ivan Brunetti’s Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice
In addition, we’ll explore some of Scott McCloud’s work about facial expressions. McCloud has some wacky theories about how emotions, and their corresponding facial expressions, are made. For example, did you know that (via Making Comics, Harper, 2006.)

We’ll learn about all of these emotional states and how to draw them. We’ll cover a few others that don’t start with D.
