Hello all. I’m not going to say anything trite here to try to sum up 2020. Let’s just skip that part. You know.
As fans of my work know, I’m a big proponent of the Year in Review. Between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day I annoy all of those close to me with this practice. Recently I was going through my early comics and came across the most basic and engaging year-in-review form I’ve used, from back in 2005. Here is a printable version.
As for my update, a few highlights.
I was appointed to the editorial board of Literature & Medicine as the inaugural Comics Editor. It’s a great honor, and I appreciate the board’s faith in me. Here’s a nice interview from JHU Press. I did a comic for the next issue, and it’s very different for me in style. Eager to share it when it’s published.
Menopause: A Comic Treatment was published, launched, and chosen as a TOP 10 OF 2020 BY THE New York Times! Very, very grateful to all of the contributors, Penn State Press, especially Kendra Boileau, and Hillary Chute for the NYT.
The COVID comics editing I’ve done for the Graphic Medicine site since March has led to collaborating with colleagues on this Lancet Article. I also contributed a comic to this forthcoming anthology from Penn State Press, COVID Chronicles. It’s available for preorder at that link.
The Graphic Medicine International Collective has been organizing a monthly online event called Drawing Together, which has been such a terrific experience and community. I hosted a few, but mostly have been creating the archive of these gatherings.
I’m thrilled to share that my colleague Alice Jaggers has come on board with the Graphic Medicine podcast, and she’s provided post-production work for the last two episodes. I highly recommend the most recent one, a 2020 Year in Graphic Medicine discussion with Alice, Matthew Noe, and the co-authors of JAMA’s article on the topic, Michael Green and Shelley Wall.
Last update from here: I’m currently working on a chapter for a forthcoming book, The Routledge Handbook of Health and Media. My deadline is in two days so I better get back to it. But I want to give you a sneak peek of the concept sketch for the star of my chapter, Comics.
May 2021 bring you health and peace. Thanks for being a fan. ❤️
